What is a Secular Bull Market?

To our firm it is “Nirvana”. A secular bull market happened from 1945-1965 then from 1974- 2000. The market moves in an upward trend anywhere from 10 to 25 years. Along the way there will be corrections and bubbles, but they do not necessarily cause an end to the bull market. There are also secular bear markets. The term “secular” just means “long-term” and bull or bear is whether the market is growing in an upward trend or declining on a downward trend. Currently we believe based on technical and fundamental indicators that we have been in a strong upward trend for growth stocks since 2012.

There are no “risk-free” strategies out there, so your best bet is to buckle down with an advisor you trust and let him or her do the hard work of protecting and growing your money. Individuals, who cannot sit still through the tough times and feel the need to jump at a “bottom” in the market, will never be successful in the stock market. There are many good times to be had, but our clients understand that we cannot control the market. Our firm invests side-by-side with our clients, because we have one goal in mind, which is to find the best companies with the strongest growth potential in their arena. If you can stick with a transparent focused strategy and have a tough attitude, you will be very successful over the long term.

All investors are looking for the permanent perfect investment, but if it existed everyone would want a piece of the action. There is nothing wrong with this desire, but as far as my experience goes, the total ideal “investment” is non-existent. Markets do quite a bit of rotating based on many underlying variables, so succeeding and failing are just a part of the investment experience for novices to professionals. Anyone else who claims they have the “no-risk/high-return” solution is pulling your leg.

A big part is that our brains didn’t evolve to deal with ever changing landscapes of capital markets. Humans are intuitive thinkers, but markets are inherently counterintuitive. Common sense thinking is important in many aspects of life, but frequently hurts you big with investing. All humans have opinions, but this can be your greatest enemy when trying to time or quantify investing in the markets.

The best time to start investing for retirement is as early as possible. Thanks to compound interest, even small contributions made in your 20s can grow significantly over time. The longer your money is invested, the more time it has to grow. But it’s never too late to start!

Answer:
Ideally, do both — but prioritize based on interest rates:

If your debt interest (like credit cards) is high (>7%), pay that off first.
If your debt is low-interest (like federal student loans), you might be better off investing, especially if you get employer-matching 401(k) contributions or you take a nice tax deduction by contributing to your business’s SEP IRA.
